Nanna Fyhrquist

Professor of Public Health Sciences · Karolinska Institutet · company speakers →

Nanna Fyhrquist received her PhD in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of Helsinki, Finland, in 1999. Following postdoctoral training, she spent more than a decade at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, where she investigated environmental influences on immune-mediated diseases. She subsequently held a research position at the University of Helsinki before joining as a research group leader Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, in 2017. In 2024, she was appointed Professor of Public Health Sciences at Karlstad University and is currently affiliated with both institutions. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory skin diseases and allergic disorders. By integrating multi-omics technologies, epigenomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, microbiome research, and experimental models, she investigates how interactions between host immunity, epithelial function, environmental exposures, and the skin microbiome contribute to disease heterogeneity. Her recent work has focused on defining molecular endotypes of inflammatory skin diseases through the integration of microbiome, epigenomic, transcriptomic, and clinical data. These studies have provided new insights into immune–epithelial interactions, host-microbe relationships, and the biological mechanisms that contribute to distinct skin inflammatory phenotypes.
